Tom started playing golf under the watchful eye of his granddad at the tender age of 8 at High Elms golf club. He became immersed in the game and by the age of 12 he was regularly winning the junior competitions at the club. This success led to him being selected to play for Kent where he has the honour of holding a 100% winning record for the county in all matches played, an enviable accomplishment.
His love of the game drew him to working in the industry taking a position at World of Golf Sidcup in the shop and when American Golf took over the retail operation, he moved onto their books. His time with American Golf has taught him a huge amount in how correctly matched equipment along with sound swing technique will help a golfer achieve their potential more easily.
The next move for Tom was in 2007 to Portsmouth University and a degree in Sports and exercise Science specialising in bio-mechanics, the study of the body in motion. This course has increased his understanding of how the body can move the most efficiently to deliver power and strength with the least amount of effort, ideally what all golfers are striving to achieve. This is also the way to avoid the strains and stresses that many golfers put on their body that cause injury so he will help his customers get more from their golf swing than they will from swing technique alone.
To complete the holistic coaching that Tom can offer customers of Sidcup Family Golf he embarked on the European Golf Teachers Federation training course and passed in 2014. Thus Tom can advise on a golfers swing style, golf equipment and exercise regime to help them not only play golf better but also stay fit and healthy.
Tom is keen to use the latest video technology to enable him to show and explain to his customers the changes they would need to make to improve their golf and his knowledge and expertise in sports science then helps him to make these changes efficiently and effectively with the minimum of disruption to the golfer’s game.
Tom has come to help us deliver an incredible learn to play golf programme and thus is not only available to help golfers of all levels but is also a major driving force of our junior programme offering free weekly classes and school holiday camps as well as undertaking the free adult beginners classes at Sidcup Family Golf.
